A city of almost 84,000 residents, Reading is the 5th-largest city in Pennsylvania after Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Allentown, and Erie. The city was named after the Reading Railroad, which unfortunately no longer exists. Reading once served as a processing site for anthracite coal transported by rail from the Pennsylvania Coal Region before shipping it to cities along the Schuylkill River. Residents of a Reading house or apartment for rent today enjoy a spectacular suburban community that is also home to 6 professional sports teams. Reading Regional Airport receives service from various carriers that fly to 5 destinations throughout the Midwest and east coast seaboard. BARTA, the Berks Area Reading Transit Authority serves Reading with an extensive bus schedule. Additionally, a study to determine a link of the BARTA with Philadelphia’s regional SEPTA is projected to end in 2009. Sometimes referred to as the "The Pretzel City" because of numerous local pretzel bakeries, Reading is well known for its excellent food and dining. Reading is also the home of the first outlet malls and today attracts thousands of guests who visit just to shop at one of Reading’s many outlet stores. Residents of an apartment or home rental in Reading can take advantage of the exception Reading School District that operates 3 high schools in the city. Albright College, Alvernia College, Pace Institute, and Reading Area Community College are also located in Reading. Reading’s community also hosts various events and activities throughout the year, including Kutztown Folk Festival, Movies in the Park, Summer Concert Series, Midsummer Craft Fair, Christmas in July, A Taste of Art, and Community Days.
