Thirty-two miles south of the state’s capital and home to 6,000 Pennsylvanians, Red Lion is situated at the junction of 6 different highways that converge on the town’s center. Because of Red Lion’s small area, population, and limited resources, most residents find themselves performing errands, shopping, and banking in nearby York, a large city located 10 miles northwest of the town. Many residents also choose to commute to York, although most residents make the 33-mile drive into Harrisburg. Residents of an apartment or home rental in Red Lion supports a number of local underground bands and independent local artists, adding to the flair and charm of the unique town.
Lake Redman and the William H. Kain County Park are both located in neighboring townships but are open to residents of a Red Lion house or apartment for rent. Especially in the summer months, residents enjoy frolicking in the cool lake waters and camping in the park. Historically, Red Lion has played a role in the Underground Railroad and is known as a hub for the nationwide furniture industry. In fact, many factories are operated in Red Lion, producing thousands of pieces of furniture for export across the nation. A former center for tobacco production, Red Lion also once had the most millionaires per capita of any town in the United States, although the status was lost when cigar manufacturing left Red Lion.
