In 1859, oil was first discovered in Titusville, sparking the birth of the modern oil industry in Pennsylvania. However, the area was first settled in 1796 along what is now Oil Creek. In 1891, the oil industry peaked and Titusville has experienced a population decline in the following years, although Charter Plastics Company still operates factories in town and is the area’s largest employer.
