York was founded in 1741 by settlers from the Philadelphia and named after an English city of the same name. The leading hub for commerce and industry in the south-central region of Pennsylvania, York is home to a growing population of over 41,000 residents. Interestingly, during the American Revolution, York served as the temporary capital of the Continental Congress from 1775 to 1783. Residents of a York house or apartment for rent can use the Rabbit Transit that offers local bus service throughout the city as well as the Rabbit Express that serves Harrisburg. Although rail service is limited, many residents catch the Amtrak trains a few miles away in Lancaster. York College of Pennsylvania, Penn State York, York Business Institute, York Culinary Institute, and The Art Institute of York-Pennsylvania are all located in the city as well.
Residents of an apartment or home rental in York have plenty of work to do in town, although Harrisburg is only 27 miles north and a 35-minute drive away. A large Harley-Davidson motorcycle factory, hydro-power water turbine manufacturers Voith Siemens Hydro and American Hydro, The Stauffer Biscuit Company of York, The Bon-Ton, and a Starbucks Roasting Facility are all located in York and provide a diverse selection of job opportunities. The historic York Fair, Olde York Street Fair, National Street Rod Association Street Rod Nationals East, and War of the Roses All-Star Game are favorite community pastimes that are celebrated annually. The Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center attracts a variety of groups that helps to enrich the cultural views of the community. York is also the home of the USA Weightlifting Hall of Fame.
