Newport County’s Jamestown is located on Conanicut Island, the second largest island in Narragansett Bay. First settled in 1524 by Italian navigator Giovanni da Verrazzano, the area wasn’t fully utilized until 1636 when Dutch traders converted the area into a fur trading depot. Accessed by the Jamestown Bridge and Claiborne Pell Bridge, Jamestown is connected to Plum Point on the mainland and Newport on a neighboring island.
