Six miles east of downtown Providence and home to 28,000 Rhode Islanders, Johnston was first established in 1759 and has grown to be one of Providence’s largest suburbs, allowing residents to commute to work in just 10 minutes without traffic. A variety of big-box retailers are located in the city and make shopping easy and convenient. Additionally, a spread of national and local retailers provide accessible services to residents, removing the necessity to travel to neighboring areas like many similarly-sized cities. Most residents of a Johnston house or apartment for rent are pleased with the Johnston neighborhoods because of the tight-knit feel despite being close to the city and having such a large population.
Residents of an apartment or home rental in Johnston find that their homes are close to local attractions including Clemence Irons House and Dame Farm. Johnston War Memorial Park is located in the heart of the city and is a hub for community events and recreational activities, namely Easter Egg Hunt, Annual Historical Cemetery, Holiday Festival, and Santa’s Stroll. Little league athletics as well as selected high school sports are also played at some of the park’s facilities. The Johnston Public School System operates 6 elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school that was a recent recipient of the regent’s commendation in 2005.
