Nestled on the southern tip of Aquidneck Island, Newport hosts a population of 26,000 Rhode Islanders. Once known as a New England summer resort, Newport is still dedicated to a thriving tourism industry in addition to providing comfortable suburban living for relatively affluent individuals and families. The area is also well-known for the famous Newport Mansions, Naval Station Newport, United States Naval War College, and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, a major training center. The largest local employer or residents of an apartment or home rental in Newport is the United States Navy, although a large percentage of residents commute to high-paying commercial and financial jobs 45 minutes northwest in Providence, 34 miles away.
Located below the main town of Newport, a recreation peninsula juts out into the Atlantic Ocean and offers residents of a Newport house or apartment for rent an abundance of parks and beaches, including Goose Neck Cove, Ballard Park, and Morton Park. The Newport Cliff Walk is one of the most popular attractions in the area, with its public walkway bordering the shoreline. Brenton Point State Park is an excellent hangout for families, with exquisite vistas, and hosts the annual Brenton Point Kite Festival. Likewise, Fort Adams, a historical fort from the 1800s, is home to the Museum of Yachting and is the main fairgrounds for the Newport Folk Festival each year. Newport is also the location of the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Salve Regina University is situated just north of Newport.
