Situated on the northern side of Aquidneck Island, Portsmouth is connected to the mainland via Route 24 and is home to a little over 17,000 residents. Settled in 1638, the area was named after a town in England by Anne Hutchinson who moved to the area with her followers after suffering religious prosecution in the strict colonies located north in Massachusetts. Historically, Portsmouth also served as the site of a turning-point battle in the American Revolution.
