Near the junction of the I-95 and I-20, Darlington is a center for tobacco farming. With a population approaching 7,000, the town is primarily an agricultural town, although a good number of residential neighborhoods are clustered around the town center. Residents of a Darlington house or apartment for rent who are not employed in the tobacco business locally commute to work in large cities nearby. Because Darlington is only 77 miles northeast of Columbia, most residents that commute to work can read their job within an hour and a half. Fayetteville, North Carolina, is only 93 miles north on the I-95 and is the second most popular workplace. Because Darlington’s town center and industrial base is so small, most shopping and other errands must be completed in the neighboring towns of Hartsville and Florence.
Darlington’s famous Darlington Raceway, a superspeedway, hosts an annual NASCAR race and draws thousands of people to the area. Other local attractions are equally important, including Darlington Country Club and Liberty Lane Walk Of Fame, the former being a leading course in the region. Residents of an apartment or home rental in Darlington are also proud of other hotspots, such as Darlington Raceway & Stock Car Museum, Williamson Park, and Beaver Creek Golf Club. The Darlington Christmas Parade and South Carolina Sweet Potato Festival are Darlington’s trademark community events. In 2006, the Darlington County Institute of Technology, Darlington Middle School, and Hartsville Middle School, completed their renovations and now provide state-of-the art facilities.
