Only a few miles from the South Carolina-North Carolina border, Dillon is situated 108 miles northeast of Columbia and is home to over 6,000 residents. Part of the Pee Dee region of South Carolina, the Little Pee Dee River runs through the edge of the city. Originally built around the railroad built through the area, Dillon’s initial growth was fueled by an expanding cargo and transportation market. Unifi runs the nation’s second largest yarn production factory and along with Harbor Freight Tools provides the most local jobs to residents of an apartment or home rental in Dillon. Residents who choose not to work in town commute to surrounding cities and Columbia for jobs. Besides driving an hour and 45 minutes to Columbia, Amtrak also runs a regional train that serves both cities and provides an ample selection of times daily. The Dillon County Airport, located on the outskirts of Dillon, doesn’t yet receive commercial service, although a slew of air taxis and general aviation utilize the field.
In 2007, construction of a new Super Wal-Mart began on the north side of town, symbolizing the beginning of growth in the area. However, most resources are still located in neighboring areas and most residents have to travel to Florence, South Carolina or Lumberton, North Carolina, where most resources can be found. Florence is also home to Florence Regional Airport, which receives commercial airline flights. Residents of a Dillon house or apartment for rent have access to a number of recreational facilities, including Harmon Field, which is the main community park that offers not only youth athletics but also programs for adults and senior citizens as well. Most residents are also active in the community and support events including the Fall Golf Tournament, Lake View Christmas Parade and Festival, Latta Christmas Parade and BBQ, Latta Springfest, Shuck'n and Shag'n at the OysterFest, and Taste of Dillon County.
