Built along the northern banks of the Savannah River, North Augusta is the smaller sister to August, Georgia located on the opposite banks. Over 300 years ago, North Augusta was once a busy trading town before settlers moved to Augusta where business was more prosperous. A recession in the tobacco market sealed North Augusta’s fate as a failed trading post. Residents of an apartment or home rental in North Augusta tend to commute a few miles to downtown Augusta, Georgia, for work, although a few businesspeople commute 70 miles to Columbia. The Augusta Regional Airport serves the community with a limited number of commercial flights. The I-520 terminates in North Augusta and provides quick drives to areas south of the town.
Westinghouse Savannah River Co., Avondale Mills Inc - Graniteville Division, Kimberly-Clark Corp., Bridgestone-Firestone, and Shaw Industries all operate significant manufacturing centers or office buildings in North Augusta and are the area’s largest employers, providing convenient work close to home. The North Augusta public school system includes 4 elementary schools, one of them built in 2004, 3 middle schools, and a single high school. The Riverside Park is especially crowded at twilight, just after sunset because of the gorgeous views of the river and tall buildings of Augusta. The Community Center organizes a bunch of community events, youth league sports, and fitness classes for residents and is available for meetings throughout the year.
