The 9,000-person town of Union received its name from the old Union Church that was just a short distance from the Monarch Mill. First settled in 1742 by white settlers, the area quickly built log cabins and began the cultivation of tobacco, flax, corn, and wheat. Today, Union is in the midst of continuous industrial expansion, but although the town is developing, it hasn’t lost its noted small-town neighborly attitude. Residents of a Union house or apartment for rent find the town’s location 59 miles southeast of Columbia allows them to choose between suburban living and driving an hour and 15 minutes each way, or working in town, although pay is usually better in Columbia. Besides the interstate and highway system, a regional railroad serves Union although most residents prefer to drive themselves.
The Union County High School is a new, consolidated school created from 3 separate campuses. Generally, Union’s public education system provides exceptional educations to residents of an apartment or home rental in Union. A branch campus of the University of South Carolina is also located in Union and provides a great deal of athletics and entertainment to the community. Both Veterans Memorial Park and River Chase Golf Club are fantastic recreational facilities and offer Union’s residents with basic walking and jogging paths as well as soccer fields, baseball diamonds, and outdoor courts. Although not in Union, Croft State Park, closer to Spartanburg, is the perfect day trip or weekend getaway with numerous campsites and spectacular views along with an intimate encounter with nature.
