As the site of the first independent American settlement west of both the Eastern Continental Divide and the original thirteen British colonies in America, Elizabethton and its community are overwhelmed with a rich heritage and strong culture that has survived since days of years past. Over 13,000 residents call Elizabethton home, 114 miles northeast of Knoxville, Tennessee. It wasn’t until 1838 and the Trail of Tears that white settlers moved into what is now Elizabethton.
