The largest city in Madison County, Jackson hosts over 59,000 residents 88 miles northeast of Memphis, Tennessee. In 1820, the first signs of settlement appeared along the Forked Deer River where the town was later named after former president Andrew Jackson. Developed as a railroad junction and maintenance shop for many railroads, the city continued its prominent role in the rail industry even after the Civil War. The city’s main airport, McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport, receives commercial service to Memphis and Detroit. Most residents of an apartment or home rental in Jackson tend to work in town or at the Milan Arsenal, a few miles north. However, a select few, usually powerful businesspeople and executives, will make the 90-minute drive daily, although the I-40 makes the trip relatively simple.
The Jackson-Madison County School System operates 5 high schools in the area, although there are another 8 private institutions in the city. Jackson State Community College, Lambuth University, Lane College, Union University, and West Tennessee Business College are also located in Jackson. Residents of a Jackson house or apartment for rent can always find an available recreation venue at many local golfing areas, such as Jones Creek Golf Course, Jackson Country Club, Hidden Valley Golf & Athletic Club, and Highland Green Golf Club, or at Muse Park and the surrounding city park system. Other local attractions include Casey Jones Home & Railroad Museum, the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx, a minor league baseball team, and the West Tennessee Healthcare Sportsplex.
