Home to just under 8,000 residents, Signal Mountain was created as a place for Native Americans to send fire and smoke signals across the Tennessee Valley and later used by the Union Army during the Civil War for communications. Later, wealthy families from Chattanooga used Signal Mountain as a safe haven from the sicknesses and diseases that often passed through the city.
