About Barre

Situated just southeast of Montpelier, the state capital, Barre is the granite quarrying center of Vermont. The town’s abundance of granite attracted many talented stoneworkers of Italian, Scottish, and Scandinavian ancestry in the early 1800’s, whose remarkable monuments and sculptures are still displayed throughout the area. The town was originally named Wildersburgh upon its organization in 1793, until it was renamed after Barre, Massachusetts. In the past, Barre was divided into the villages of East Barre, South Barre, Graniteville, and Websterville, but time has melted these areas together to resemble one unified town. Within the Graniteville area is the Rock of Ages Quarry, which is the main producer of the world renowned “Barre Gray” granite.
