About Brattleboro

The town of Brattleboro is separated into the villages of Brattleboro and West Brattleboro, and has a population of approximately 12,000. Once a settlement around Fort Drummer, the town was founded in 1753 and was named in honor of Colonel William Brattle Jr. Located in a valley along the Connecticut River and the West River, Brattleboro was once characterized as a health remedy due to its pure spring waters. The uneven terrain of the area has caused much of the population to be concentrated at the bottom of the valley, giving the town an urban atmosphere.

Almost all of the residential development in Brattleboro is situated on the west side of town, in addition to some bigger one to two family sized houses located in the more southern districts. The western residential area contains the state’s largest mobile home park, and has many residential development plans being formed that will open up much more housing for the town. The rest of the town is occupied by large commercial and industrial companies such as the Holstein (cattle) Association. Other industries that play a role in the town’s economy include printing, the manufacture of paper and lumber products, and optical goods, however, tourism is the base of Brattleboro’s economy. Residents of Brattleboro are rewarded with excellent shopping and dining that has also catered to many celebrities such as Johnny Depp, Whoopi Goldberg, Robin Williams, Eminem, and Nicole Kidman. The town also has the ability to provide for all types of people since it is home to places such as the School for International Training, the Austine School for the Deaf, and the Brattleboro Retreat, which is one of the largest, private psychiatric hospitals in the US. Caroline Balestier, the wife of Rudyard Kipling who was a popular English author, also lived here with her husband for some time.
