About Winooski

Just northeast of Burlington, Winooski city lies on a steep hill along the Winooski River. The city was founded in 1787 by Vermont pioneers, Ira Allen and Remember Baker, who saw that the area near the river’s lower falls had much waterpower potential. In the past, the city was known as “Mill City” because it was only after the establishment of a wooden mill in 1835 that the city really started to develop. In those days, textile manufacturing was the major industry, but today, Winooski’s industrial bases include woodworking, soap making, and tool and die industries. The name Winooski is of the language of the Abenaki tribe and translates to “this is where the wild onions grow.”

Although most of the historical wooden mills are still intact in Winooski, almost all of them have been converted into commercial offices in order to revitalize the economy of the city. However, the history of the mills has still been preserved through the Mill Museum and Winooski Historical Society.
