About Abingdon

In the mid-1700’s Daniel Boone called the area “Wolf Hills” because Black’s Fort, a settlement that protected settlers from the attacks by the Cherokee. In 1778, Black’s Fort was incorporated as Abingdon, named after Boone’s home in Pennsylvania, Lord Abingdon. Abingdon is located in the Blue Ridge highlands of the Appalachian Mountains near the Tennessee border. Although Abingdon is mostly a resort town, it also supports the state’s largest Burley tobacco market, and holds livestock auctions. The town also has a reputation for creating exquisite handicrafts and chinaware. Barter Theater, the country’s oldest and longest running repertory theater, is also located here. Virginia Highlands Community College and Mount Rogers National Recreation Area is also nearby.
