Nicknamed “The Center of the Universe” because of its central location within the state, Ashland is only 15 minutes away from Richmond, the state capital of Virginia. Ashland was a settlement that developed along the Old Washington Highway, and the Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac Railroad that is currently owned by CSX Transportation. The railroad passes right through the heart of town, which was originally named Slash Cottage until it was changed to Ashland in honor of Henry Clay’s estate in Kentucky. Today, the Ashland train station attracts many rail fans who love to watch the trains go by. Ashland also contains the nation’s oldest volunteer fire stations, the Ashland Volunteer Fire Company. After the relocation of Randolph Macon College to Ashland, the town has developed mostly into a small college town. Many of the residents of the town like to keep the town small and laid-back, which was emphasized even though they unsuccessfully fought off a bid to allow Wal-Mart to build a store in the area.
Citizens living in a home or apartment for rent in Ashland love the safe atmosphere of the town. Ashland has a very effective police force, and streets that are safe for not only drivers, but also bikers, joggers, and walkers. Ashland offers many recreational activities ranging including golfing, fishing, and cycling; however, Ashland also contains modern attractions such as the King’s Dominion, a 400 acre amusement park. Ashland also boasts unique eateries, notable homes, and great shopping. This beautiful town also contains many historic sights that pay tribute to the interesting events of the American Civil War within the area.
