Bedford consists mostly of rough, hilly terrain surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, the James River, and Smith Mountain Lake. The town was named by John Russell, the Fourth Duke of Bedford. The myth of the Beale Treasure is also believed to be located in the Bedford area, which attracts treasure hunters to the town from all over the world. Abraham Lincoln declared Bedford to be an important town in America’s history due to its ties to Thomas Jefferson, Booker T. Washington, and the lines of the Avenel mansion. Bedford has also been recognized by the nation because it had the most citizens per capita that died fighting for freedom on the shores of Normandy in 1944.
