The town of Bluefield, Virginia is part of the larger Bluefield District, which also contains Bluefield city located in West Virginia. Until the town of Bluefield was named to resemble its sister city in West Virginia, the town was named Harman. Harman was a small settlement that formed around a post office named Pin Hook. After the Norfolk and Western Railroad was built through the town, the town of Harman rapidly grew and was renamed Bluefield. During the late 1800’s, the steel industry began to grow in the town, and Bluefield regarded itself as “the Pittsburgh of the South,” however, the town suffered greatly during the Great Depression, and any chance of the town’s expansion was prevented. Recently, the town has undergone a new wave of growth, resulting in the introduction of a new Wal-Mart, strip malls, and a new medical center.
Residents living in the town of Bluefield are offered many educational opportunities at institutions including Graham High School and Bluefield College. The town also has its own minor league baseball team, the Bluefield Orioles. Bluefield also has many historic districts within the area. Some famous people that lived in Bluefield include Bill Dudley, a NFL Hall of Famer, and Ahmad Bradshaw, a player for the New York Giants.
