About Bridgewater

The first settlers to make their home in the area of Bridgewater in the 1740’s were of Scottish or Irish descent. Soon after, people of German descent also settled here. The area was originally named McGill’s Ford, after the man who owned a majority of the land in the area on either side of the North River. Eventually, the name was changed to Bridgeport after settlers began to build mills in the area along the river, which resulted in the town becoming a port for flatboats that could ship products to and from the town. In 1835, the name was changed once again and the town was chartered as the town of Bridgewater. Today, Bridgewater serves mostly as an area for business with government and professional offices, and a variety of retail companies. Residents of Bridgewater will find both educational and healthcare facilities in the area. Bridgewater College is a well known institution in the area, while people can also be cared for at Bridgewater Home, a private nursing facility, and at Bridgewater Retirement Village. The town also provides many recreational services including parks, a golf course, and organizations such as the Bridgewater Little League. People can also have a great time attending yard sales, concerts in the park, shopping, dining, and going to the town’s annual Labor Day Celebration. This is a charming town that is sure to please anyone.
