About Burke

Burke is a large suburban community that was named after Silas Burke, one of the first settlers of the area. Silas Burke was a farmer, merchant, and local politician who built a historic house still standing today. The community developed in the 1840’s around a train station built along the Orange and Alexandria Railroad. The station was named Burke’s station after Silas Burke, who owned the land where the station was built. The residents of Burke have always made it a point to keep the community suburban, especially when they successfully lobbied to prevent the US Government from building an airport in the area to serve Washington D.C.

Residents of Burke are provided with a wide array of schools, including Lake Braddock Secondary School, and Robinson Secondary School. Efficient transportation is always provided by means of the Virginia Railway Express and the Metrobus. All recreational services are provided by the Fairfax County Park Authority and the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority. Burke also holds many notable events such as the Burke Farmer’s Market, a grand fall festival, and a Pumpkin Playground every October.
