With a bustling population of over 40,000 residents, Chantilly is 24 miles from Washington D.C. and is part of the Washington metropolitan area. Much traffic moving in and out of Washington D.C. often comes through Chantilly because the Washington Dulles International Airport is located here. Chantilly, which was named after a French town, is home to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy center (an annex of the National Air and Space Museum), and the headquarters of the National Reconnaissance Office. Some of the Chantilly area was also once an American Civil War battlefield, and although much of the battlefield has been developed into commercial and residential establishments, a small county park still preserves the history of the battle that took place here.
Chantilly is a town that is slowly growing, due to many development projects that are opening up new, beautiful homes and apartments for rent. Residents of Chantilly are offered an excellent choice of education from either the Fairfax or Loudoun County Education systems, depending on where they live. Chantilly also has a public library, the Chantilly Regional Library. Chantilly has a hotel district that primarily serves the needs of Washington D.C., which includes hotels such as Sierra Suites Hotel, Westfield Marriot, Holiday Inn, and Hampton Inn. Also located in Chantilly, is a site either known as the Sully Historic Site or Sully Plantation, which is an estate upon which Virginia’s first representative to Congress, Richard Bland Lee, built his home in the late 1790’s.
