Colonial Heights is a city of 17,000 located in the Tri-Cities area of Richmond and Petersburg. Both the Tenakomakah and Appamattuck tribes lived in the area. Built during the 1670’s and 1680’s was the Brick House Farm, one of the area’s beautiful, historic landmarks. The city’s name, Colonial Heights, resulted from an incident during the American Revolutionary War where French troops known as the Coloniels retreated and deployed artillery on the land overlooking Petersburg from across the Appomattox River. Another historic site in the area is Oak Hill, an estate from which General Lafayette used a canon to shell Petersburg, which was then occupied by the British. Colonial Heights is filled with an interesting history preserved by many of its attractions including Violet Bank, Swift Creek Mill, Fort Clifton Park, and White Bank Park. The city also offers its residents an excellent education, backed by schools such as Virginia State University, and Richard Bland College. Colonial Heights also offers two free publications: The Colonial Voice and the Colonial Heights Patriot. Colonial Heights also hosts a massive celebration, the Fort Clifton Festival, which includes arts and crafts, food, music, games, and history.
