About Culpeper

The town was originally named Fairfax in Culpeper County, however, the name of the town caused much confusion with Fairfax County, and therefore, the name was changed to Culpeper. A pro-independence militia group, named the Culpeper Minutemen, formed in Culpeper in an area known then as “Clayton’s Old Field,” which is known today as Yowell Meadow Park. Much activity took place in the town during the American Civil War; both Confederate and Union force occupied the town at various times. Culpeper has grown in the past several decades to become a “bedroom community” of one of the many suburbs of Washington D.C., which offers new houses and apartments for rent. The recent development of the town has cased some discussion as to whether the residents of the area would rather keep the town’s rural character, or allow it to continue to become a more exurban community.

Culpeper is part of the efficient Amtrak system, which provides rail transportation for the residents in the area. Some notable people who once lived in Culpeper include Confederate General A.P. Hill, Keith Jennings, a former NBA point guard, Eppa Rixey, a MLB player, and musicians J. Loren Wince and Kenny Alphin. Located in Culpeper is the “Graffiti House” at Brandy Station, where both Union and Confederate soldiers signed their names and wrote comments on the walls. The rich history, beautiful landscape, shopping, galleries, and restaurants have earned Culpeper the title of “One of the 10 Best Small Towns in America.”
