Danville is located along the Dan River, just 45 miles away from Greensboro, North Carolina. The city was once a settlement known as The Ford and Wynn’s Falls, which was a site visited by an explorer, William Byrd. Danville was chartered in 1793, and it became an inspection center and river shipping point for tobacco. After the establishment of a railroad passing though the town, Danville’s tobacco industry grew dramatically. The Dan River Cotton Mills, which was once the largest single-unit textile factory in the world, was also built in Danville and made the town a major textile center. Other industries in Danville include the manufacturing of gypsum products, tires, glass, and bricks. Completed in 1938, the Pinnacle Hydro-Electric Station provided inexpensive electricity for the city.
Danville has many excellent educational institutions, some of which include Averett College and Danville Community College. Danville is also home of the Danville Braves, a baseball team within the Appalachian League. Danville also holds several summer concert series such as the Danville Harvest Jubilee. Danville has many great outdoor activities including paintball, fishing, hiking, and golfing. Danville is a wonderful town filled with historic museums, wonderful dining and shopping, and fun recreational activities.
