About Emporia

Located in Greensville County, Emporia has a population of roughly 6,000 people. In 1887, two Virginia towns, Hicksford and Bellfield, merged to become the town of Emporia, which was named after Emporia, Kansas. The city of Emporia was chartered as an independent city in 1967. Emporia has been a busy town due to its location where the railroad lines, CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern, cross. The town also contains several budget restaurant chains and hotels due to its location along one of the state’s first interstate highways. NASCAR drivers Elliot Sadler and Hermie Sadler, and writer Michaelene Robinson lived in the area. Today, Emporia produces mostly soybeans, pine and hardwood lumber, and tobacco. Emporia’s lifestyle is heavily focused on biking; the Emporia Bicycling Club host regular group bicycling activities, including the Great Peanut ride, where bicyclers go to a festival on a peanut farm. Emporia also has a wide variety of historic and cultural attractions such as the Greensville County Courthouse, Village View, Greensville-Emporia Historical Museum, a music festival put together each year by the Meherrin River Arts Council, the Virginia Pork Festival, and the Virginia Peanut Festival.
