Front Royal was originally named LeHewtown, after Peter LeHew, a French Hugonot, who purchased 200 acres of land in the area. Then, in 1788, the land was purchased by a group of real estate speculators who established the town Fort Royal. The town was also known as “Helltown” in the 18th century due to the abundance of rough and wild mountaineers and river travelers who often came into town in search of women and alcohol. Railrway lines were established in Front Royal in 1854, and eventually Front Royal industrial bases included lumber, agriculture, manufacturing, and grain milling. Some well known educational instituions including Randolph-Macon Academy and Christendom College are located in the are, as well as other instititutions such as the Smithsonian’s Conservation and Research Center. The Avtex Fibers Superfund Site is also located in Front Royal, were the land of a former rayon manufacturing company is being transformed into recreational land that will service the community. The popular and beautiful Shenandoah National Park is also located in the area, in addition to numerous American Civil War monuments and attractions such as the Confederate Musium.
