About Galax

Located in Southwestern Virgina, Galax is a small, upbeat town that is famous for its traditonal music and musicians and known as the “World Capital of Old Time Mountain Music.” Many immigrants from the British Isles settled here, where they established both farming and a wonderful musical heritage. After the railroad was established in the town, Galax gained its name due to it being a major harvester of the glossy Galax leaves that are used in floral arrangements. One of the most prominent traditonal music contests, The Old Fiddler’s Convention, takes place in Galax annually, where it attracts many new and popular bluegrass musicians. Nearby is the Blue Ridge Parkway where the Blue Ridge Music Center, which contains a classic amptheater and museum, is located.
