About Herndon

With a population of over 20,000 residents, the town of Herndon was named after Commander William Lewis Herndon, who was an American naval explorer, and died while captaining the sinking SS Central America in order to save over 150 of its passengers and crew. In the 1870’s, many Northern soldiers settled in the area due to its comfortable climate and low cost of land. The first residents of Herndon traded with the local Native Americans, which helped the town to grow and prosper. Today, Herndon is a rural area near Washington D.C., and the town is mostly a dairy farming and vacationing area.

Much of Herndon’s history is centered around the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad station that was converted into a museum, and the Norfolk Southern Railway Caboose that is now on display. The town is also part of the Dulles Technology Corridor, where major companies including AOL, Verizon Business, and Network Solutions are located. Aerospace company, Airbus North America, and Volkswagen, is also located in Herndon. Herndon is a fun town that provides all of its residents living in a home or apartment for rent with attractions including Taste of the Town, Friday Night Live!, farmer’s markets, the four day long Herndon Festival, Fourth of July Celebration, and the Labor Day Jazz Festival.
