With a population of over 15,000, Highland Springs was founded in the 1890’s by Edmund Sewell Read. Highland Springs was primarily a streetcar suburb of Richmond on the Seven Pines Railway Company’s electric street railway line that ran between the city and the National Cemetery. The area was given the name Highland Springs due to the number of natural springs that were found in the area. Highland Springs and in the areas nearby are filled with historical sites and monuments that preserve many events of the American Civil War. Highland Springs offers a solid education at schools such as the Highland Springs High School. Highland Springs close location to the bustling city of Richmond makes it easy for residents to leave the rural atmosphere of Highland Springs if they desire, and find the attractions that the big city nearby has to offer. Richmond has many museums including the Museum and White House of the Confederacy, Monument Avenue, and the Richmond National Battlefield Park. Although Highland Springs is a suburb of a major metropolitan city, it still contains the relaxing lifestyle of a rural community.
