About Hopewell

About 20 miles southeast of Richmond, Hopewell is a port city located at the confluence of the James and Appomattox Rivers. The area was first settled in 1613 around a plantation named Bermuda City; however, the plantation was destroyed after an attack by the local Native Americans in 1622. Eventually, in 1635, Frances Eppes built a new settlement in the same area and named the town Hopewell, after his ship. Hopewell was a major center of activity during the American Civil War; City Point, which is a division of Hopewell, served as General Ulysses S. Grant’s headquarters during the battle at Petersburg. The city of Hopewell really began to boom after the establishment of a munitions plant in 1914, but after World War I the growth of the city began to slow down. Today, Hopewell’s economy has been revived by the chemical, textile, ceramics, and paper products industries. Although Hopewell is mostly an industrial city, Hopewell’s residential areas are dominated by rental properties and low-income housing projects. However, the city has also been increasing the numbers of modern, upscale housing due to recent development in the waterfront, downtown, and City Point Historical District Areas. Hopewell now contains some beautiful Sears Catalog Homes and Aladdin Kit Homes. Hopewell offers a wide array of shopping and dining experiences, as well as historic attractions at the museum at Grant’s Headquarters at City Point, the Air Museum, and Weston Manor.
