About Lorton

The town of Lorton got its name from a town in England, where Joseph Plaskett was born. Joseph Plaskett was one of the first settlers in the area, and he established a general store and the Lorton Valley, Virginia Post Office. During the early years after Lorton’s establishment, most of the commercial activity was located in nearby Colchester, while the spiritual and historic life was centered in Lorton’s Pohick Church. Within the past decade, Lorton has undergone substantial development which established the Gunston Plaza Shopping Center, which includes a medical clinic, business offices, stores, a gym, restaurants, a senior citizen’s center, and a post office. A new and expanded library was also built in Lorton. The Lorton Heritage Society has also recently opened the beautiful Lorton History Garden.

Lorton offers substantial education through the Fairfax Public School System, as well as transportation via Amtrak’s Auto Train. Lorton includes many historical sites and monuments, including Gunston Hall, George Mason’s Home, Pohick Church, Belvoir, which was the mansion of George Fairfax and now the site of Fort Belvoir, and Cranford Church. Nearby attractions include Woodlawn Plantation, and Mount Vernon, which was George Washington’s home.
