About Manassas

The residential city of Manassas was originally named Manassas Gap, then Manassas Junction, after the Manassas Gap and Orange and Alexandria railroads that passed through the area. Manassas is located near the Bull Run creek, which is about 35 miles southwest of Washington D.C. During the American Civil War, the city was of strategic importance due to its location along the route that connected the Shenandoah Valley and the Washington-Richmond area. Following the war, Manassas was primarily an agricultural area, until improved transportation brought residents to live in the area who would make their daily commute to the Washington area.

Today, the downtown area of Manassas has been revitalized and tourism has become a major focus of the economy. The Manassas National Battlefield Park has been a major historic attraction that is the site of two Civil War battles. Transportation in the area includes the Manassas Regional Airport, as well as Norfolk Southern Railway system, and Amtrak lines. Also nearby is George Mason University and Strayer University. The city also holds a Fourth of July Festival, as well recreational parks where people can camp, hike, etc.
