About Martinsville

Martinsville is located in the eastern foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the city was established in 1793 when the Henry County Courthouse was built there. Later, the courthouse’s name was changed to honor General Joseph Martin, who was an officer during the American Revolution and a settler in the area. Martinsville has a population of over 15,000, however, it is mostly an industrial city of the manufacturing of furniture, chemicals, and textiles, and the processing of tobacco. Martinsville was the home of many professional athletes, including NFL players: Rabih Abdullah, Greg Gaines, Carl Hairston, and Shawn Moore, in addition to MLB players: Randy Hundley, Todd Hundley, J.C. Martin, and Lou Whitaker. NASCAR driver, Buddy Arrington, also lived in Martinsville, where the shortest but one of the oldest NASCAR speedways, the Martinsville Speedway, is located.

Martinsville is home to many historic attractions, including the Virginia Museum of Natural History, the Piedmont Arts Association, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Residents can find much entertainment, dining, and shopping in the exciting Martinsville Uptown district. The area surrounding Martinsville also offers many fun outdoor and recreational activities at the Fairy Stone State Park, Blue Ridge Parkway, and at all of the public parks in the area.
