Located 22 miles northwest of Washington D.C., Reston is an urban community in Fairfax County. The community was developed by Robert E. Simon during the 1960’s. Simon developed the community according to an original concept known as urban planning. The urban planning design consists of a number of separate villages each with its own “town center” serving as a retail area. Each “town center” is located about a half-mile away from another. This design is meant to reduce the road traffic and allow the community to be self sustaining with its own shopping centers, recreation establishments, schools, industries, and medical facilities. The Dulles International Airport is conveniently located nearby.
The Reston Town Center is the main business center of the community; it contains high-rises as well as low-rises, and has shops, restaurants, offices, a hotel, and a theater. The Reston Community Players, Reston Chorale, and the Reston Community Orchestra provide the community with great musical entertainment on a frequent basis. Residents living in a home or apartment for rent often use the bus and Washington Metro to get to the Washington D.C. area for even more attractions. Recreational activities are offered at the Lake Fairfax Park, where people can picnic, camp, and participate in water sports. The beautiful community also is home to a zoo, two golf courses, numerous public swimming pools, and tennis courts.
