About Salem
European settlers first explored the area where Salem is now located during the 1670’s. In 1752, Fort Lewis, named after General Andrew Lewis, was one of the first establishments in the area. The settlement grew and its purpose was primarily to serve travelers along the Great Road. Roanoke College is also located in Salem. The city is also known for its athletics, because it plays host to the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, which is the NCAA Division III football championship game. Salem is now also the host city of the NCAA Division III basketball, volleyball, and softball championship games. The city of Salem displays the great beauty of nature through many attractions, ranging from farmers markets to recreational activities. The city provides many biking routes for residents who love to go outdoors and have some fun. The city’s park and recreational service also provides activities for people of all ages ranging from children to senior citizens. The city is also home to the Salem Museum, which is filled with great historic attractions. Salem also offers a great education system, backed by schools that are also known for their excellent athletic programs.
