About Smithfield

Nicknamed “The Ham Capital of the World,” Smithfield is a town of 6,000 located in the South Hampton Roads region of Virginia. Smithfield was first colonized in 1634, and was situated along the Pagan River, and not too far from Jamestown. The town was established as a seaport by Arthur Smith IV in 1752, and today, the town is known for the curing and production of its own Smithfield ham. The extremely successful Smithfield Foods and Smithfield Packing Company is the world’s largest pork processor and hog producer. Smithfield also once contained a very large and prosperous peanut industry, until most of the peanut warehouses were destroyed in the fire of 1921. Smithfield also contains a rich history relating to the American Revolutionary and Civil War, in which the town had a major roll in due to its location near the James River. Smithfield’s Historic District contains numerous historic buildings with unique architectural designs from the Colonial, Federal, and Victorian periods.

Most of the attractions in Smithfield can be found along the town’s Main Street. Here, residents and visitors can find great shopping, dining, and other fun activities and events. Main Street is where all of the town’s festivals and parades take place. The area is also known for containing unique antique and specialty stores that will intrigue any shopper. Art galleries and the work of local artists also line the street. The Main Street area has also undergone massive renovation in the past decade, which has resulted in a wonderful and vibrant district that has won many awards for its beauty.
