Named after Boston, Massachusetts, South Boston was first established in 1796 along the south side of the Dan River; however, flooding problems in the area forced the town to be move across the river to the northern edge. During the 1850’s, the Richmond and Danville Railroad was built through the town, which helped develop the town into a main grower of tobacco. Today, South Boston has over 8,000 residents and one of its larger tobacco warehouses was just converted into the Prizery, a visual and performing arts center, in 2002.
South Boston is a charming town that has its own hospital, museum, and YMCA, and is home to a number of volunteer organizations that are always working to keep the town as beautiful as possible. The town is also known for its extremely friendly population, where the residents are always helping each other or visitors who need a pointing in the right direction. The town is filled with great shopping and dining experiences, but the town also contains many other attractions including the South Boston Speedway where NASCAR drivers, Ward Burton and Jeff Burton began their careers. Many other athletes began their careers in South Boston, including former professional football players Tyrone Davis, Ferrell Edmunds, Earl Ferrell, Barry Word, and Donald Testaman.
