About Springfield

Home to over 30,000 residents, Springfield is a suburb of the Washington D.C. area. The community of Springfield is split up into three districts: Springfield, West Springfield, and North Springfield. Some parts of the community of Newington are also considered to be a part of Springfield. The community originated as a train station along the Orange and Alexandria Railroad, which was built in the area in 1847. The station was named Springfield after the estate belonging to Henry Daingerfield, on which the station was built. In 1946, realtor Edward Carr helped spur a massive development of land in the area due to its easy accessibility to the Washington D.C. area. The growth was highlighted by the construction of the Robert E. Lee High School, and the increase in the population for 1,000 in 1950 to 30,000 toady.

Development of a new Springfield Mall and the older Brookfield Mall has made Springfield a major retail center, boasting great shopping and dining. The community also provides excellent transportation via the Washington Metro, Virginia Railway Express, Amtrak, and a bus system. The community also holds many events including the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner Celebration, a Golf Outing, Mardi Gras Casino Night, Membership Gala, and Mini-Golf Classic. Springfield also offers great farmer’s markets where fresh, local produce can be found.
