About Staunton

Situated in Augusta County of North-Central Virginia, Staunton is a city of about 24,000 located along the Shenandoah River. The city is right between the Shenandoah National Park and the George Washington National Forest. The area was first settled by John Lewis in 1736, and his son Thomas Lewis, planned the layout of the city in 1747. He named the city for Lady Rebecca Staunton, who was the wife of Sir William Gooch, a colonial governor of Virginia. From 1738 to 1771, Staunton served as the capital for the region which was known as the Northwest Territory. After the construction of the Virginia Central Railroad there in 1854, Staunton became a transportation center. Stanton also served as a supply base during the American Civil War. Today, Staunton center for the market of various goods including vegetables, grain, fruit, poultry, and cattle. The city is also a manufacturer of products such as medical supplies, furniture, textiles, and air conditioners. Located in the city are Mary Baldwin College and the Virginia School for the Deaf. Staunton was also the birthplace of President Woodrow Wilson, where the Woodrow Wilson Museum is now located. The city also contains a memorial site for Cyrus Hall McCormick, who was the inventor of the mechanical reaper. The site includes McCormick’s restored farm and workshop. The city also contains a number of well established antique shops, boutiques, and restaurants. Staunton is also home to the Montgomery Hall Park, where many fun recreational activities are offered.
