About Suffolk

The city of Suffolk is located in southeastern Virginia at the head of navigation of the Nansemond River. The city also lies near the Great Dismal Swamp, which is located directly southwest of Portsmouth and Chesapeake. In 1974, Suffolk merged with the towns of Holland and Whaleyville to form the largest city in land area in the state with an area of 430 square miles. The area was first settled in 1720, and was named Constance Warehouse after John Constant who established the tobacco industry there. In 1742, the town was renamed Suffolk after the town in England, however, Suffolk was burnt down by the British during the American Revolution, but it was soon rebuilt. Today, Suffolk’s main industries include peanut processing, tea, and the manufacturing of bricks, fertilizer, wood products, and farm machinery. Suffolk offers great recreational activities such as fishing and boating at all of its six local lakes and the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge.
