About Vinton

Although the town of Vinton was first chartered in 1884, the town’s history dates all the way back to the mid 1700’s, when the area in the Roanoke Valley was first settled. The Gish brothers, Christian and David Gish, were one of the first settlers in the area, and in 1797, they built they built a grist mill along Glade Creek. Named Gish’s Mill, this was the first major establishment in the area that is now known as Vinton. Eventually, the Atlantic, Mississippi, and Ohio Railroad passed through the area, and the train station, Gish’s Depot, was established. Then, the Gish family led a movement to establish a town around the depot, and the town of Vinton was born.

The Vinton Dogwood Festival is the largest and grandest festival held in Vinton each year. During this week long festival, residents show off their community to the rest of the area. Another popular attraction in Vinton is the Vinton War Memorial, which honors primarily the citizens of Vinton who lost their lives in World War II.
