About Waynesboro

Waynesboro is located in the Shenandoah Valley along the South River near the junction of Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway, which is located about 28 miles from Charlottesville. Waynesboro was originally named Teesville, named after Joseph Tees, who was one of the first land owners in the area. Later, in 1797, the named was changed to Waynesboro, in honor of the American Revolutionary War General, Anthony Wayne. During the 1880’s, a smaller, industrial city began to develop on the eastern side of Waynesboro. This city was named Basic City, after the “basic” steel manufacturing process, and the city was incorporated into Waynesboro in 1923. Today, Waynesboro is mainly a manufacturer of stoves, food products, textiles, pencils, metals, and plastics. Waynesboro is also a center for tourism, because the city attracts many visitors to the nearby Shenandoah National Park, George Washington National Forest, Sherando Lake Recreation Area, and Grand Caverns. Another popular attraction located in Waynesboro is the home of P. Buckley Moss, and the P. Buckley Moss Museum. The city is also home to the Waynesboro Generals, a baseball team in the Valley Baseball League. An all male military school, the Fishburne Military School is also located here. Waynesboro offers great shopping, dining, and many fun historic and modern attractions.
