About Winchester

Located in the northern Shenandoah Valley and 70 miles northwest of Washington D.C., the beautiful city of Winchester has a population of about 24,000. The first settlers in the area that is now Winchester were the Pennsylvania Quakers, who arrived there in 1732. The city was officially established as Fredericktown in 1744 by Colonel James Wood. In 1752, Fredericktown was renamed Winchester after Winchester, England. George Washington resided in Winchester for a period of time when he was surveying the lands west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Today, that site is now a museum. The city was also taken over several times by the Union and Confederate armies throughout the course of the American Civil War. Winchester is a manufacturer of rubber goods, tin cans, plastics, and textiles.

Because Winchester is located I the heart of an apple growing region, the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival that takes place in the area is a major attraction for both residents and visitors. Just east of Winchester is the state arboretum, the Orland E. White Arboretum at Blandy Farm. The city is also home to the Shenandoah University and the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley. The museum features beautiful gardens and a historic home. Winchester was also the birthplace for several famous people including Richard E. Byrd, who was a polar explorer, Patsy Cline, a country music singer, and Willa Cather, a writer. In addition to many more historical attractions, Winchester also offers excellent dining, and shopping.
