About Anacortes

Anacortes is located on the northern tip of Fidalgo Island, and is connected to the San Juan Islands and Victoria, British Colombia by ferry. The city was originally established in the 1860’s as a port named Ship Harbor. Eventually, local developer Amos Bowman renamed the area Anacortes, after what he believed to be the Spanish spelling of his wife’s name, Anna Curtis. The city was once known for its oil storage facilities and fish processing industries, but those have since declined and allowed tourism and recreation take over as the city’s economic bases. One of the most popular attractions in the area is the Padilla Bay National Estuarine Sanctuary, which is a stopover spot for migrating waterfowl. The city is also a popular place for boating, especially at Washington Park, a 220 acre park that features camping, boat launching, and spectacular views of the surrounding area and the San Juan Islands. The Anacortes Community Forest Lands offer great hiking and biking trails. Rock climbing is offered at the beautiful Mount Erie Park.
