Auburn is situated in the White River Valley, just 10 miles northeast of Tacoma. The city was laid out by Levi W. Ballard in 1887, and he named the city Slaughter, after a man W.A. Slaughter. However, the residents did petition to change the name, and in 1893 the city was renamed after Auburn, New York. When the North Pacific Railway came into the area, Auburn became an agricultural trade center and a manufacturer mostly of airplane parts. The city also contains a monument that marks the site of the White River Massacre, where there was a major fight between several pioneer families and the local Native Americans. The city offers great education at schools such as the Green River Community College. Other attractions in the city include the Auburn Symphony Orchestra, Evergreen City Ballet, and the Emerald Downs racetrack. Historic documents and artifacts can be found at the White River Valley Museum. Great outdoor and recreational activities can also be found at the Green River Hatchery and Mount Rainer National Park. The city also hosts many fun events and festivals such as Kids Day, Auburn Good Ol’ Days, Petapalooza, and the Santa Parade.
