Located in the southwestern region of Washington in Clark County, the city of Battle Ground has a population of about 9,000. Ironically, the city was named Battle Ground due to the prevention of a battle in the area. In 1855, there was an uprising of a local Indian tribe in the area, and when some captive Indians of the Klickitat Tribe escaped, Captain William Strong was sent out to re-capture them. In an interesting turn of events, Strong was able to talk the Indians into returning without any fight or battle, which caused Strong to be accused of cowardice. Eventually, the name where Strong “re-captured” the Indians was named Strong’s Battle Ground, until the name was shortened to just Battle Ground. One of the main events that take place in Battle Ground each year is Harvest Days. This festival takes place over a period of time, and the community holds numerous parades, street dances, a carnival, and a chili cook-off. During the Portland Rose Festival’s Grand Floral Parade each year, Battle Ground almost always wins the award for Float Best Exemplifying Community Or Civic Involvement And Pride, except when it won the Sweepstakes Award for Most Outstanding Float in the Parade in 2006. Great outdoor and recreational activities are also available at many parks around the city including the Clark County Lewisville Park, Lucia Falls, and the Battle Ground State Park. The Pomeroy Living History Farm is also located in the beautiful city of Battle Ground.
